Dodger Dog Package
If you’ve followed this site for a while, you know I’ve been on a long search for Dodger Dogs. I had some help that certain Smart and Final stores in the Bay Area might have them, but alas, the one near me didn’t carry them…even after I called and they said they did have them.
Well, everything looked brighter this week, when I made a list of all the Smart & Final stores in the Bay Area. I started calling them, but you had to be careful because many carry Farmer John dogs, but not Dodger Dogs. Finally, I made a breakthrough. The store a little farther from my house carries Dodger Dogs..but in their frozen section. Apparently this is the difference. You have to check the freezer section, not just the refrigerator section. They only seem to sell them in 18 packs, which are a lot to eat, but all the more reason to have a party for your local Dodger fan friends.
So here’s the kicker. I have searched high and low on the internet and no one seems to sell Dodger Dogs. Unless you live near a Smart and Final in California, I don’t know of any other way to get them. I also called UPS and they do allow you to ship them, but you have to do them 2 day air to make sure they don’t spoil. You also have to freeze ship them with dry ice.
Here’s where I need your help. I know that people from all over read this site, and not just here in California. My question is:
Would you pay to have some one ship a pack of Dodger Dogs to your house?
Would you pay even if it cost $40-70 dollars for an 18 pack? Obviously the dogs don’t cost that much, but early estimates of shipping are $20-40 just for UPS.
Let me know your comments below. Also, if you know for sure you want them, e-mail me at scott@sfdodgerfan.com and I’ll work out sending a pack to you. I’m really thinking of starting to sell Dodger Dogs on-line, so I’d love a few people to test the process with.
Thanks for your help. Long Live the Dodger Dog…I can almost taste it I’m so close.

This is the reply from Hormel (unfortunately) A/O June3, 2009:
Thank you for contacting us about FARMER JOHN(r) Official DODGER
DOGS(r) Franks.
The Dodger Dog is not available in many parts of our marketing area. Northern California is one….. But in Southern California, we have them even in 3 lb. packages available at Smart & Final stores, frozen, with 18 dogs to the package. And some major retailers will carry the one pound fresh package during the season. It is not something you can order direct from us unfortunately.
And here is another posting:
Thank you for contacting Smart& Final with your inquiry.
Yes, we do sell Dodger Dogs in all Smart and Final stores.
However, online services are currently not available through Smart and Final.
Please request to speak to your local store manager for further product assistance.
We regret being unable to serve your online needs at this time.

I think it’s funny. The more I find out I can’t get them, the more I want to keep trying. In this world of people buying a piece of preserved toast with a picture of the virgin Mary on Ebay, why can’t they mail Dodger Dogs in a freezer safe package? This seems weird to me.
So, I’m still looking. My focus is changing though. Now I want to find out how to ship them from L.A. If L.A. is where they are, then L.A. is where they have to come from. I want to see what UPS and some of the postal carriers offer in terms of shipping frozen goods. My initial searches have recommended a double package, with the inner package containing the hot dogs, and then putting dry ice or a freezer gel product around it, then putting all that in an outer box. I would obviously have to really watch the temperature to make sure the hot dogs stay good.
It doesn’t seem that hard to do…the issue may be cost, and making sure they are delivered to a house so they can go straight back in the freezer.
So – the search continues. If you have shipped frozen goods, or know of a good option, please leave a comment. Rumor on the street is that a package of 5 Dodger Dogs costs about $3.50 unless you find a 1/2 off sale on a holiday weekend. I’d definitely spend more than $3.50 to ship a package and enjoy a classic Dodger Dog.
