So one of my wants with this website is to give Dodgerfans visiting San Francisco a list of cool things to do while in the area.
In order to get this process started I wanted to give my story of my favorite restaurant in San Francisco. Even better is that it happens to be right across the street from the ballpark.
When I got married in 2002, my bachelor part was to go to a game in San Francisco at the now AT&T park. The Dodgers weren’t in town so we saw the Giants play the Diamondbacks. My best man was a Giants fan from up here, so he made me wear a bright orange Giants shirt to the game. Each of the guys signed it and gave their “recommendations” for me getting married on it, so it had lots of personality. Thankfully one of my true friends from L.A. happened to bring one of those crazy Dodger wigs that has the wavy blue and white hair.
So if you can picture a white guy in a Giants shirt with sharpee markings on it, wearing a Dodgers wig…that was me. Honestly it was hilarious seeing the Giants fans come up to me because they didn’t know how to react. For one the Dodgers weren’t even playing and I was wearing a Dodgers wig. I more than once got the question, “Are you confused?” It was a cool night because Barry was setting all kinds of records at that time and hit a homerun for us.
After the game, my buddies had arranged for us to get dessert at Momo’s restaurant across the street. We had a cool dessert, but it was on the way out that all the fun started. Little did we know that it was common for the Diamondback players when they were in town to go to the bar at Momo’s after the game. We were walking out and my cousin who is from Arizona noticed that Mark Grace was walking into the restaurant. It wasn’t a coincidence that he recognized him since he happened to be wearing a Mark Grace jersey. He ran inside to talk to him and came out stating, “Guys, half the Diamondbacks team is in the bar.” Suddenly, we weren’t ready to leave.
Inside was Mike Fetters, Luis Gonzalez, Mark Grace and a handful of others. All of them were just hanging out and chatting with people. We started talking to them and we were amazed that they were just cool to hang out and talk. You never know with baseball players if they really want to talk, or were just being nice. These guys were just having a drink after the game in a different city and didn’t have anywhere to go. They were way cool and were just interested in talking with people.
The funny part of the story is that I was with all those baseball players on my bachelors party and didn’t have anything to get their autographs with. My buddy’s explained the situation to the management at Momo’s and this is the real reason I love this restaurant. Momo’s gave us a wine list (complete with holder) that I could use to get autographs on as a momento. Even more funny is that for some reason they couldn’t find a pen, just a green highlighter. So to this day I have a nice wine list from Momo’s with the signatures of Mark Grace, Luis Gonzalez, and Mike Fetters in green highlighter. (A glimpse as to why I was such a big fan of Luis Gonzalez when he came to the Dodgers later.) It is probably the coolest sovenier with the coolest baseball story I have.
So – there’s my story. Go to Momo’s awhile after a Gaint’s game and you never know who you might see. Even if you don’t see anyone, it’s a great place to eat and hang out and it’s right near the stadium.
Got a cool story of your own? Add a reply and I’ll add it to the website.
