Wore my Dodger hat to get my Toyota worked on this weekend (No, not the recall, but a different factory issue). The guy at the dealership looked at the hat and said, “You don’t see a lot of those up here…Did you grow up down in Southern California?”
I explained that I grew up Southern California up in the mountains near Big Bear. He said he grew up near Van Nuys and that he used to be a huge Dodger fan. Apparently his Grandfather used to own a concrete company down there and that they had season tickets right near the field. He told the story of how Orel Hershiser was his all time favorite growing up and how he still has a signed ball with Orel’s signature, Tommy Lasorda’s, and all the guys from the early 80’s. (I love hearing stories like this!)
I asked him why he “used” to be a Dodger fan? He said he fell out of it once he moved up here and got really into hockey. Apparently now he’s an avid Sharks fan who has season tickets.
Cool guy…just too bad he doesn’t follow as much any more. Who knew that it isn’t just the Giants turning Dodger fans away. I guess I should send him some tickets this year to a Dodgers/Giants game to try and re-kindle the passion.
I did though tell him about my favorite website…www.sfdodgerfan.com

Got to love Giants fans…Always stuck on one horrible phrase. I love the Jaime McCourt for President though…
Thanks!

Gotta love those McCourts!
Thanks for the link. You were ahead of the curve on that one. It hit the press a little later and exploded down south. What a mess. It’s too bad because it just hurts the fans…the business will go on. Between your team and pot smoking and my team and the divorce, we’ve both got baggage…
You know; there IS one thing that is missing more and more as the years have passed.. And that’s the simple fact; and at least once a season or so aknowledging that fact.. And this is that no matter who’s where in the standings; or whatever, I KNOW, that over 40+ years of being the hard core Giants fan that I am and always will be; is that it wouldn’t have been worth nearly the investment and love for our team if it were not for the damn Dodgers.. The dodgers have always been the cherry on top for dedicated Giants fans; and the real ones’ know it; and DO appreciate that fact.. I wrote a letter to Tom Lasorda just after the Candlestick opener after the ‘88 season, and told him that I thought the Giants fans should have given them at least one minute of respect as they made they’re way across the diamond to they’re dugout; and Tom took bows , to a massive chorus of “BOO’s” at home plate.. All I’m sayin’ is that a real Giants fan; or Dodgers fan; should at least try to remember once in awhile what it might be like without one another there every year… After ‘what happened in ‘88 we should have tipped our hats for just one or two seconds in appreciation of the team that makes being loyal to OUR team so much sweeter; and vice versa.. That’s all I have to say about that.
Your Dodger hatin’ friend,
Thanx!
Steve
You’re a true fan Steve. It’s the game and the rivalry within the game that lives on. Yeah, I can’t stand the Giants, but it sure is a lot more fun rooting against them! It wouldn’t be the same without them.
